It is widely accepted that AQP1, 4, and 9 are expressed in the brain. Among of them, AQP9 belongs to the aquaglyceroporin which is involved in the lipid metabolism.
Given that AQP3, 7, and 9 cross-talk between adipose tissue, muscle, and the liver, I wonder what is the main role of AQP9 in the brain.

as retrieved from gene cards, AQP9 Forms a channel with a broad specificity. it mediates passage of a wide variety of non-charged solutes including carbamides, polyols, purines, and pyrimidines in a phloretin- and mercury-sensitive manner, whereas amino acids, cyclic sugars, Na(+), K(+), Cl(-), and deprotonated monocarboxylates are excluded. Also permeable to urea and glycerol.
Typically, brain is the most sugar consumer organ of the body, you can therefore understand that metabolism need to be at top on every moment.

AQP9 is expressed in liver, white blood cells, testis and brain. The functional role of AQP9 in the brain is still unknown, but it may play a role in energy metabolism.

It seems likely that AQP9 is up-regulated by ischemic (hypoxic) stress in neurons.
