I'm working on a project for which I need to extract the alkaloids in Lycorma Delicatula (the spotted lanternfly) for HPLC, and I'm having a difficult time finding an adequate protocol for alkaloid extraction from insects. Would it be appropriate to follow an alkaloid extraction protocol intended for plants?
Using a plant protocol is a reasonable starting point.

(1) cleaning the insects, drying them and crushing them into 40~60 mesh screens to get insect powder.
(2) Take insect powder in step (1), add 85-95% ethanol, then extract it by ultrasound for 30-40 minutes, filter, and extract the filter residue for 2-3 times, and merge the filtrate.
(3) The filtrate of step (2) was adjusted to pH 10-12 with dilute ammonia water, and concentrated to no alcoholic taste at 50-70 °C to obtain the extract.
(4) Disperse the extract of step (3) into suspension with proper water, then add 3-5 times amount of ethyl acetate to extract for 3-4 times, remove fat-soluble impurities and collect water layer.
(5) Insect alkaloids were obtained by adding 3-5 times of n-butanol to the water layer of step (4) and extracting n-butanol for 3-5 times, and recovering n-butanol under decompression.
