If I want to obtain isolates of actinomycetes which produce novel biologically active secondary metabolites, what is the best media for cultivation of these actinomycetes to help them produce biologically active secondary metabolites?
Please help me if you can.
Starch casein agar (SCA) medium is commonly employed for growing actinomycetes. You can optimize medium components for the better production of secondary metabolites. In my opinion, marine actinomycetes may produce some novel drugs rather than their terrestrial counterparts because of their high adaptation in the sea. You can also collect samples from different locations, for instance, deep sea, sea shore etc for discovering novel species or compounds.

Probably you can use the ISP3 or IPS4 media or soil extract media (if your actinomycetes are of soil origin). You can also try out some stress medium that contains soya meal, molasses, starch etc.

For cultivation of actinomycetes use starch caesin media or actinomycetes isolation agar but for the production of secondary metabolites from them i would prefer SS broth as it enhance the production as well as extraction of bioactive compounds seems to be good. you can also optimise the SS medium by designing its composition according to your need which will not only makes your work novel but also helps to exploit the actinomycetes diversity a bit more.
And, i also agree with the above answers that try to explore marine actinomycetes as it has much more potential than terristrial one.

If you serach about noval biometabolites , sources of isolation must be marine habitates. You can use starch caesin medium and adject pH equal to pH of isolation sources

In any laboratory, there is a couple of media that is generally used as the production media e.g. ISP2. However, the selected media might not be good for all actinomycetes.
So, it is no exact question for this answer.
But the good example is to search natural product paper e.g. Journal of Antibiotics for their production media and trying with your strain.

If you use starch casein agar medium or other medium, you should response surface technology soft ware to determine critical factors that affect the high production of metabolites.
