We have a Cressington 208HR sputter coater (http://www.cressington.com/product_208hr.html) in our lab. I used it to deposit 40nm thick gold layer onto a porous polycarbonate membrane in order to cover the pores with Au layer. But under SEM, I could see that the pores were not covered and the sputtered Au only covered the area where pores were not present.

In literature, people report using Denton Discover 18, or Perkin-Elmer Model 2400 sputtering systems for successfully coating the pores.

I wish to know if it is the instrument related issue that I did not get enough dense Au coating to cover the pores by using Cressington 208HR?
