Milli Q, single distilled, double distilled, autoclaved, deionized - these are the words i encounter before water.I confuse a lot to understand these words.Is there any way to quickly determine the type of water to be used in the specific experiment .
Doing experiments you want to know all components as best as possible. These factors may influence the outcome of your studies which then will not be reproducible. Tap water contains minerals and organic components which want to get rid of.
Autoclaving may be important in addition to one of the other procedures to avoid contamination with microorganisms. If you use water in tissue culture experiments it should be autoclaved or sterile filtered.
By deionization you get rid of salts in your water. You can check the quality by measuring the conductance. The quality should be e. g. good enough for culture media for E. coli.
Double distilled water will be greatly reduced in minerals and organic components. It used to be the standard in many labs (Biochemistry, Mol. Biology).
“Milli Q water” stands for water purified by a series of ion exchange columns, charcoal and a membrane filter. The leading company selling these devices is Millipore. "Milli Q water" has widely replaced double distilled water.
