Sorry to you, Stenni, that I can not describe here what has to be further developed and patented :-) but there should be no doubt that elucidating important pharmacological pathways - which currently appear to be a black box - should be a multi-billion dollar market... of course, any new cancer drug, costs about 2 billion dollar in development and getting it into the market (that's why only big pharma can afford it and no university can do (as far as I know) such a job; but without knowing the real pathways, one could invest in hundreds of failing clinical phase I, II and III studies, when using some new approach can select for the right candidate... and still clinical tests need to be done, but with better promises...

So, I am not asking big pharma to support me - I ask for seed money or venture capital, but would prefer an investor with enough impact in my field. Maybe three years later, the big pharma could try a management buy-out...

Hi Robert, I feel your pain. My company (Hememics) have developed a method to store platelets at 4oC for 1 month without loss of activity. We have used the same reagents to store RBCs way past the 3 months and have used the reagent to store viable CTC in whole blood for 6 days. And we have published all of this (see attachments). 

However pharma is not interested. They are making money right now and the less they spend in R&D, the less money they risk. .

Hi Yuan. Pharma companies have only one goal--make money.

That is why you see many of them laying off researchers. They have figured out that it way less expensive to buy out companies that have gone through the FDA process to gain new technology rather than develop the technology themselves.

Companies have shown interest in our technology, but they want us to carry it through FDA before they will even talk to us..

I guess they just don't want to go through the expensive and long process of FDA regulatory approval. This is just like the regulation of plant GM products to be released to the market. The regulatory process is long and costly. A lot of small companies just cannot afford that. Who can sit there waiting for so many years (for a product to be approved) and without income? Only a few large Agri-biotech companies such as Monsanto can afford this kind of investment and time.

Hi Yuan, exactly. Small biotech do all the work and publish their findings and Pharma is paying attention.

All Pharma has to do is to wait until the small biotech runs out of money or declares bankruptcy. Then they buy the company including their technology/patents.

Pharma can buy cash strapped small biotechs for ~10 million$, but Pharma will be saving ~100 million$ by not doing the basic research and paying lawyers to file paperwork and legal papers for the FDA.

Could you get his opinion on our technology (HemSol)? (it is mostly hematology, so it might not be his forte)

If he is interested to promote our technology and maybe get funding or start up, we would need  a sales manager/ technical advisor/ PR person.

Hi Yuan, I am not running the company. There are more capable people doing that.

In the meantime, I am working as a contractor for small biotech companies in the area.

This summer I might be working as a janitor in DC.

If I were you @ Steingrimur Stefansson, I would work at McDonald's flipping burgers. Janitor is too lonely, no crowds around and no foods around. Working at McDonald's seems to have more fun, but I don't know which one has more hourly wage.

So, come back to the topic, what a contractor do for small biotech companies? And, I saw you have been publishing papers and as the first author (meaning: you are doing researches). How come you have so much time to juggle two jobs??

As a biochemist, I am very good at what I do and everybody knows it. It comes easy for me. I will always find a job..

What are you going to when your grants run out? Deadlog teacher or crossing guard?

I may work part time at small biotech companies but most of my  60+ articles are peer-reviewed with me as first or last author. You pride yourself as being  2d or 3d author on non-reviewed posters, data articles or book chapters. Pat yourself on the back. Good job Yuan!
