are you completely certain the salt used is magnesium (Mg) and not manganese (Mn) ? I do not know any coloured magnesium salts.

Paul is correct. Non of the constituent in the buffer is likely to give rise a "color".

I use MgSO4 and sometimes its brown. But color goes away after mixing the solution.
