There are some abnormal particles, which have smallpox form, on the SEM cross section images of NF PES membranes. What are these?
What a tremendous analogy - smallpox! :-)
I think, there are just some structural elements of the material (like foam plastic balls). Usually such structures can be removed by a jet of compressed air.

Yes! This was the first word that came to my mind when I saw the SEM images!! Smallpox!!
I found this SEM image which is somehow like my images. The author introduced them as " Nodules".
What is your idea? Are the abnormal particles Nodules on my images?
Your particles are of very generic form, you can find such on many images and all (OK, most) will be of different origin.
As for your specimen, it looks like its inner structure consist of such granules. Take a look at fracture surfaces at higher magnification. If I am right, then these particles are detached (during fracture and/or washing) granules.
