I am required to use Ansys to run a FEA on some tensile test specimens that I am also going to test experimentally using a universal a testing machine.
So far I under stand that I need to model the problem in ANSYS as a static structural analysis, and I have also imported my specimen geometries from auto CAD. I need to fix one end of the specimen and add a displacement of 5mm/min to the other end as I am testing to ASTM D638 polymer testing standards.
How do I use ANSYS to apply a displacement of 5mm/min until the specimen breaks and then obtain the stress/strain data to compare with my experimental?

First of all, these sorts of experimental tests are quasi-static and you can either use Dynamic Explicit/implicit (I recommend the explicit one).
Secondly, you need to define a surface/node set/reference point to apply the displacement. For applying displacement go to the boundary condition (or Load in Abaqus) and define the displacement.
Finally, be aware that you need to calculate the true stress and strain in your experiments because the Ansys results so or just compare the load-displacement curves. To extract the results you need to use XY data.

Hi Callum, could you please let know what type of material properties you are modeling? Are you planning to do birth and death? Or just a simple one to extract stress-strain behavior. As, you may know the simulation results will depend on your material properties (ex: if you dont define the plastic part of material, your stress-strain curve will be linear elastic only at the end).
As you are mentioning specimen breaking, you need to definitely model element death. Also, material properties should have break strength modeled. Modeling will be easy where you can apply displacement on one end set of nodes with boundary condition. Strain data can be easily extracted with a displacement controlled simulation. Stress can also be calculated using force and geometry information (engineering).

To answer Soud Choudhury with regards to material properties I have just selected the polylactic acid material that is available in the ANSYS data library. would I be better off creating my own material with the properties that i collect once I've done the lab tests?
All I'm trying to do with ANSYS is do a simple tensile test to simulate the lab tests I will be doing with a universal testing machine. My supervisor has been very vague but I think I need to compare the young modulus of the experimental and ANSYS.
My ANSYS knowledge is very basic as I've never used it before or been shown in a class.
