Split GFP11 - need to be on termini?

I am interested in working with the split GFP system (GFP1-10 on on protein, GFP11 strand fused to another). Almost all examples I have seen have fused the GFP11 strand to the N or C terminus. Does anyone know if complementation is possible if you put the GFP11 strand inside a peptide (internal insertion vs fusion to the termini). Do you need any linkers? Does the efficiency of complementation go down?
