Open access has been growing since the development of the internet. Now more than 50% of new research is freely available online, with 25% being made available straight away and the rest being made available within 12 months of publication. In addition to this, increasing numbers of historical papers are being moved into the open-access domain. Now, there is a campaign to make all publicly funded research data open access. Although considerable progress is being made towards achieving this, not everyone agrees with the principles of open-access science. What do you think?

It is desirable, but may not be possible at this moment. Because many researchers lack funds to pay for the article processing charges needed for most of the mainstream open access journals and only few journals are open access and don't charge, where the compaction is very high.

Dear Nazia, open access is necessary. Without open access scientists are handicapped. Almost weekly I do find on ResearchGate a very useful article bringing me further with my publications about stress languages, racialisation and terrorism, deprivation of immigrants and refugees in education, health and labour market. I think it is necessary to publish the result of researches with low publishing fee and be open access to all researchers free, but most high quality journals request high price to publish open access.

Free exchange of scientific information is the true essence of intellectual stance. One of the universal declarations of human eights stipulates that all individuals have the right to freedom of opinion and expression and that they should enjoy the freedom of receiving and imparting information and ideas through any media and regardless of man made frontiers. On this basis, researchers allowing open access provide a humane way of sharing research outcomes with other members of the speech community to which they belong- a generous act ultimately leading to the development and dissemination of knowledge across the world..
This will not be possible while there are journals that are published by companies that work on a for profit basis. Somebody has to pay the costs.It is either the readers or the authors.Making available all scientific publications(not only research)after a waiting period e.g. one year is a reasonable alternative
Yes. It most be. Knowledge is for every body. Labs and scientists obtain resourses from university, goverments and founds, if all this institutions have money for taxes this knowledge is propiety of community

The simplest way to reach this terrific goal is war. The extension of science is one of the big hurdles to harness war.

The open access system is a great idea if you only ask for the possibility that everybody - poor or rich - may get (carefully checked) scientific content for free.
But there are some problems.
1. Many of the open access journal are machines to press money. Many of them have a wide scope that does not fit the expertise of editors to understand if the content is worth publishing. Thus many of these journals have worse or no review processes. Consequently, the content of these journals must be questioned even if the study may be important and was carefully undertaken. The latter may be true for some papers in “normal” journals, but the ratio is completely different to my point of view.
2. Many departments (especially in the western world) do not have an additional funding for open access. Thus open access is mainly focused on these communities that have funding or pay the charge for the personal benefit in the job. And even if there is an open access funding, the best results are still submitted to those journals with the best impact.
3. Especially in Europe the impact of a journal where someone is publishing is very important when the person/s want/s to have permanent position or a funding of a project. Only a limited number of open access journal have significant impact. The best work is often not published open access.
The main benefit of a growing open access strategy is that people, which do not have any access to “normal” journals, now can do (a still limited) literature search for related studies to provide and (still very limited) comparison with the own results.

How can all research scholars pay publication charges? especially in developing countries. In almost Indian universities the fellowship of 5-6 months of a student is equal to processing charge of a single reputed journal. Our students can not think about open access easily.
