From my point of view, a good teacher should have many characteristics:
1. On the professional aspect, he/she should be
- Informative: have excellent knowledge of the subject matter he/she teaches.
- Well trained and updated: It is not only to master what to teach, but also know how to teach, be updated with the best practices and the latest innovative approaches in teaching.
- Know how to employ technology in the process of teaching as it has the potential power of making teaching and learning easier, faster and cheaper.
- Be aware of the psychological factors in the teaching/learning process, to keep students encouraged to be active, participate and take part in the process, and not treat them as passive receivers. He/she should know how to arouse students curiosity, and the love learning.
2. On the personal aspect, the teacher should
- Have a strong personality: be a friend, but firm, and fare.
- Have a well understood voice.
- Be well dressed and have good appearance.
- Show tolerance and know how to control his/her anger.
- Have good relations will peers and share information.
A good teacher is passionate about their subject and has a through knowledge of it. A good teacher is passionate about their students and want's them to understand the knowledge that is being offered to them. Therefore, a good teacher presents the knowledge in several different ways to the students. A good teacher encourages their students to excel and strive for excellence, not just do the minimums.
The one who never grows up and the little Prince remains. The one who accepts all the newspapers. The one who speaks the truth. One who does not have to be ashamed. The one who was strict but just. The one to whom the pupils respond with respect when retiring
It is difficult to define a good teacher, because this attempt will lead to different results according to which pedacogical paradigm you focus.
If your pedacogical paradigm springs from an autonomy-oriented conception of the human being, the following approach could be continuative:
According to Self-Determination-Theory human beings have 3 basic psychological needs: autonomy, competence and social relatedness. These needs support motivation. Motivated pupils are willing to learn.
If you are able to design your lessons in a way that supports the evolvement of these needs, you are - likely - a good teacher.
Have a look at this paper: http://selfdeterminationtheory.org/SDT/documents/2011_KusurkarEtAl_MedTeacher.pdf
in my opinion, some of the most important features of a good teacher are: devoting herself/himself to teach students, practical knowledge+experience, accountability and responsibility to the children needs.
A good teacher is one who has to do all his life ... because he loved the job he who never thought to change his job. This means that he loved his students !!
In my opinion, (s)he is devoted to students' logical, critical and creative thinking and (s)he teach them how to ''catch the fish'' - this is a metaphor considering students' achievement in the highest possible level and in the field that is appropriate to their abilities, interests, motivation etc.
