Dear ResearchGate community, being tired of playing the publication game, and utterly shocked to see in inflation of publication charges (10k€ for my last 3 papers in open access!!!), I would to ask you if you know some peer-review journals in the biology/microbiology fields, with impact factors, that do publish free of charge? !!!

The alternative is to publish everything in bioRxiv for example, but it is not peer-reviewed.

I know what are the costs of a publication BUT on the researcher side you have to get the grant and pay to do the experiment, you have to pay to publish, you have to review others’ papers for free and you have to pay to read. The thiefs publishers have then the best business model on earth where their own clients pay three times for the same product and also work for free. I agree to pay for open access but I would like to have a regular publication way of publication for free or 200$ and not 3000$!!! That is why I still prefer preprints immediately available and free and review them myself for the ones I read. Moreover publisher should be careful because some communities begin to organize themselves with rigorous reviewed preprints like in animal science https://animsci.peercommunityin.org/
All reputable journals are now charging authors, rather than subscribers. This is good because it means your work will be more widely read. Choose the journal you want to publish in, the very best one, then do everything you can to pay. That's what money is for!

I cannot agree that the more "reputable" the journal, the more "widely read" your work. I believe that an interesting article, even if it is published in a journal with a low impact factor, will have enough readers. Of course, if the author wants to see his "creation" without fail in an expensive "package" and is ready to pay any price for it, then let him publish!
As an example for me reputable journal n microbiologie are J bact or cell mic ! But even these old guys are now quite expensive (~200 $ a page) when the it used to be almost free for a non open access version. This business model is horrible !!! Does Stephen king have to pay his editor to publish ?
Ive never paid anything to publish my articles, there are plenty of subscription based journals in the Microbiology field, in Elsevier journals, it's optional you can choose Open access or not, the same thing with Wiley and Springer.

It would be interesting if researchers from developed countries also consider the option of publishing in journals from developing countries (for example, in Latin America). Many are free or low cost, but they are of excellent quality!

BMC journals are all good, they charge for open access : £1570.00/$2290.00/€1870.00 but, not by page.
You can also check if you are eligible for a waiver (depends on the country). For some countries it´s free, some others get 50%.
