I want to convert the data from excel to SPSS 20.so far I convert it but now facing problem in Data Type.I want to convert from string to numeric for analysis and while doing so all of the data become blank in data view.
Kindly guide how can i solve this issue?

I often import data from excel to SPSS by copy and the past, then you can define the variables names and their properties after you past data in the data editor.

I did the same but the data type is string and i want to convert it to numeric by simply changing data type.In such way am getting system missing value.how to overcome this issue.

Let us take the following steps:
1- Open excel sheet and write this example:
Marks Learning_method
70 1
80 1
85 2
86 2
Now you have two learning methods ( 1= lecture , 2= lab. )
2- Open file in SPSS, and copy and past the numbers in above example in the data editor
3- Go to variable view and type the name of the variables, and choose for the Learning_method variable numeric type then define in the values column 1=lecture , 2=lab. then choose from measure column the Nominal item.
You will find in the data editor the words and you can convert them to numbers through the icon of value labels.

I always code data in the excel sheet, then copy & paste to SPSS, define variable names & values (codes). Be sure data in excel were from left to right before copy & paste otherwise the order of variables wil be reversed
Dear Duaa-Duaa, we recommend using two different raw data files in Excel: one containing some meaningful text for analysis in Excel using pivot tables and the other containing only numbers for importing into SPSS as it prefers numbers. You can import the sheet directly when you put the variable names in the top row. All the variables should then be imported as numeric rather than string. You may need to adjust some of the measures and decimal place settings but it is generally much easier than a direct copy and paste. Finally, you can tell SPSS what the numbers mean using the values field.
@Khalid Hassan give you best replies.. i always use to copy n paste and then change the variable type and give the codes.....

I converted the SPSS date file to Excel, however, it looks weird as I want to keep the value label as they are not havening numerical value or Null instead of them.
I have attached both files to look at and advise on.
