I want to derivatize my fatty acids in methyl esters. according to protocol I should add 10% BF3/methanol in the sample.
I want to confirm that does 10% BF3/methanl means 10 ml BF3 in 90ml Methanol (and 5:45 for 50 ml volume)? I also want to know that can I store this solution in plastic falcon of 50 ml?
I would assume that 10% means weight per volume and not volume per volume. In this case you need to dissolve 10 g of solid boron trifluoride in methanol so that you get a final volume of 100 ml. I see no problem to store the solution in plastic falcons.

Dear Misbah Hussain, it depends on the type of preparation (%v/v or %wt/v) and the physical state of your starting material (solid , liquid or gas). If you are working with a BF3 stock solution, then 10% will mean 10ml BF3 in 90ml methanol (total volume 100ml) just like you are contemplating. However, if your BF3 stock is a solid (doubtful since BF3 is a gas at room temperature), then 10 g of solid boron trifluoride in methanol so that you get a final volume of 100 ml will be good as Christian said. You can then share each 100ml preparation into two tubes of 50ml for storage. However, doing a 5:45 preparation will equally mean your final percentage is 10%. While plastics can be used for short-term storage of methanol, they are generally not recommended for long-term storage due to deterioration effects and the subsequent risk of contamination. Remember that methanol and its vapour at certain doses are toxic to humans. Ensure safety measures. Thanks
