3D per se is a good model to increase the invasive potential thus simulating in vivo conditions (hypoxic microenvironment for example). Moreover, invasive potential has shown to increase in 3D cultures by using γ-radiation (LV Qian, 2002) and IGF-1 (Logan A Walsh, 2011) in pancreatic cancer cells and MCF 7 breast cancer cells respectively.
