I got shortlisted for Training in Molecular Cloning & Protein Expression under CCMB Skill Development Programme. As I did my Masters in Molecular Biology & Biotechnology (Agriculture) will it be useful or Should I focus on Ph.D entrance exams?
I would suggest you to focus on your examinations because once you enter in a laboratory you will get deviated and couldn't focus back on your studies. For now, clear atleast some examinations for India or otherwise prepare for abroad.
It is not useful to spend 25k INR for a mere training try to join as a JRF and learn then. But first decide which way you would like to proceed for!
If you can effort it, go for it. Having a practical knowledge and a training in a reputed research institute is a benefit for your research career. However, it depends on what is your goal. If you are going for PhD, you learn all of these during the tenure anyways. But, having this certificate may favor your selection during PhD interviews. It also improves your CV. Good luck

Definitely it will be a good platform, which helps you to learn hands on skills, and will give exploration to new people and work.
Think about it if you are able to spend money for this, otherwise you can request any professor to give a platform to work in their lab for learning techniques in your interested areas.
I am saying this from my personal experience. I would suggest prepare for PhD exams in anyway you will learn a lot during your PhD. Secondly, if you are planning to go abroad I would say do it. Otherwise for India, this won't even matter because if you qualify exams and you have a fellowship any professor with your clear basic concepts will take you for a PhD.
My dear friend; Let me tell you that never choose any line of study unless you have a definite goal for your career. Do not go by other's advice. For such type of answer you will find that 100 people will give you atleast 20 different answers (if not 100 different answers) as everybody has their own way of looking at it. You decide what you want to do and then proceed. I would say opting for Ph.D. too should be scrutinised by you and only you as you know what you want to do in life.
Tell me some thing about your future plans. I presume you are a fresher who just graduated. You will have dreams about your career which have a rosy glow. So if you open up and let me know about your future plans then I can give you some suggestions. You may correspond with me at [email protected].
My observation about Govt R&D is not good. Most of the technician and permanent staff in India Govt labs do PhD there and try to get work done through fresh students. And also do harassment of new students.
When I was SRF in one the prime Govt lab in Pune, India, I saw even WHO sponsored fellows, used to fill microtips for 3 months, at the end HOD advise just to copy paste one PCR image for her report. Student was from from Burma. Another student did suicide due to guide harassment in the same city in different institute. There are lots of horror stories in Indian Govt labs.
There is no time for Govt people to train new students and budding scientists, at least in Indian Govt.labs.
So dont waste money and time.
Join private lab, pay fees on customized training or project, which will give you some kind of publication at least in NCBI database protein or gene or coauthorship in National conferences.
And go abroad. i.e. out of India. There you can do free training and more exposure wherever you are interested.
If any govt labs demand money for training, write letter to HRD minister. One of the major goal of Govt R&D labs is to impart training. See on there website, they claim that. And get funds from Indian Govt for this. I don't understand how Govt R&D's demand fees for training.
I trained more than 300 students in last 10 years and on paid basis as private lab. Most of my students are placed in good R&D in India and abroad. If you are serious about PhD, go for GRE and TOEFL. Get trained in any private lab. Make three good referee and apply abroad. USA is best place. I went there for post doc and came back for my priorities at home. But most of the research is in USA and western countries. Don't waste time in India.
I do not agree with Devendra. You cant be so negative for a fresher student to draw back her interest. I have worked in India and also abroad. The story is similar. I see bad phases here too. So don't judge the things the way you do. I am sorry about your thoughts!
Try to get a good institution and most importantly learned and productive Guide for PhD. The institution and lab environment is itself a learning class. I will not recommend to go for workshop at this stage. If you want you can go for several webinars online. If need any help, will be happy to provide. Good luck.
you should follow some reputed institutions abroad on Linkedin like MIT, Stanford, Duke, University of Basel, Oxford, UNMC, University of Michigan, UCLA, and some private institutions like Jakson lab, Charls River, Eli-Lily, GSK, Sigma, Merck etc. They provide it time to time. If I will come across any will let you know.
Ask questions to youreself, whuch is the topicof your interest if you wants to do PhD. I agree with Swaroop kumar. Try to learn most of the things from webinars on you tube uploaded by ULCA and others (Again its true that most of the knowledge sharing videos are from USA based professors).
Earlier I shared my views, I am sorry if it hurts.
My experiences in USA was much better than India.
Most of the good research is being done in USA and Western countries. Expenditure on S&T from GDP is also a reason of limitations about Indian science. And also fellowships amount is very less.
If you get good score in GRE and TOEFL, best option is exploring life and science abroad.
I do not want to sound judgemental, but charging 25K to teach cloning and protein expression does not make sense. Normally, people are paid 25K or more per year to learn (and do) cloning and protein expression, not the other way round. Since you already have an MSc, I would go straight for a Ph D abroad.
