As far as I have worked I have studied and taught right from my teenage years so I am unable to think about people who have PhD and not sure of what to do with it . That is sad/sorry state of affairs.

Having a passion takes you deeper into research or exploration , if you lack that then nothing is meaningful , my life experience ...

It begins from a childhood. Kids who are not willing to read, to talk asking various inquisitive question, showing little interest in the basic scientific subjects at a school, hating mathematics, its logic and capabilities - probably they aren't best college students for natural sciences and engineering departments. Even the best colleges, regardless students' scores, can't raise interest and love to the sciences studied, unless it had happened during their school times.

One cannot become a good researcher, if one's heart and soul are somewhere else - not at a job they do daily. Research jobs used to require high pressure and uncertain progress relating a successful flow and completion of projects. Non-dedicated staff can't be happy under the circumstances. The sooner such people change the paths of life, the better for them (and for the organizations they work for).

The success in the investigation; or in other words, success as a researcher, is achieved when you have motivation, you prepare every day to be better, you develop to the maximum your intellectual and practical abilities to investigate, create and innovate; that is, Create New Knowledge.

With all this, you finally succeed, but if the goal is to be successful at the expense of everything, you will not achieve it and on the contrary, you will only get pain and frustration.

There are several advices coming from experience and observations. To become a successful researcher, one has to learn how to think, analyze everything (not necessarily research dependent) at a level much deeper, than usually used in casual conversations. Life is full of secrets, contradictions, reasons and their consequences.

One is to learn how to extract and use information obtained, how to judge information sources, how to built various views from the same series of facts, how to compare different view points. That is one ought to develop a simultaneous way of thinking, and capabilities to talk seriously with oneself. Asking right questions is at least as important as to find right answers, if not more than that.

For instance, physics is difficult to study for many just because one is to answer numerous questions from oneself and find right answers to it. It requires two things indeed - one is to be admiring the variety of subject matters united by the same basic laws and rules, and to be being in a permanent training to do it. One is to sweat to master skills for success.
