There is no standard time for a patent because they vary so much in type, and in areas of many patents there must be a clear reason to give the patent (not just for using it). The bigger issue is getting other agencies to approve the use, such as the FDA in the U.S. and this is based on clinical data and not the basis for a patent. Also, materials and drugs may be sold (if approved for use) even while the patent is pending.
