Make as much literature as you can on the specific aspects you want to patent. Define anything that can be challenging to protect and then define the claims. Make sure you define the boundary conditions of your experiment as well. Also any poster, publication or even conference abstract are considered as "published" work and may interfere in the anteriority of divulgation. There is a delay that must be respected for that.
