It seems that viral infections have been described for virtually every human organ except for Bone. Certainly there are bony sequelae of viral infections, such as osteomyelitis variolans seen in smallpox, but I am not aware of a viral osteomyelitis per se. Is it possible that some pathologic or radiographic findings, may be explained by an as yet undescribed viral osteomyelitis?
I find nothing regarding viral osteomyelitis through PubMed or OMIM other than an association with HIV.
Our group has shown how alphaviral infection can trigger bone loss by disrupting osteoblast function. If you are interested the paper is: Arthritogenic alphaviral infection perturbs osteoblast function and triggers pathologic bone loss.

They showed that RRV can infect both primary human osteoblasts and murine bone cells.

Kaposi's sarcoma can involve the bone and is caused by Human Herpes virus 8. I would have to review the histopathology to see if it in any way may reflect oseto.
Excellent point Harold, I was really getting at primary infection of bone caused by virus .would there be an authority at the CDC or elsewhere?
I find a recent study of association between Rhinoviruses and Kingella kingae osteoarticular infections in children, but there is not direct damage of bone by virus. Certainly, certain viruses may be the aetiological agents as written above.
