I am retrieving sequences of a gene family in a specie, I have found that several genes are given same name on NCBI, Are they paralogs of eachother?
Paralogs are genes related by duplication within a genome.
Orthologs retain the same function in the course of evolution.
Paralogs evolve new functions, even if these are related to the original one.
They may be orthologs or paralogs, depending on function..
The accession number is a USI (Unique and Stable ID), permanent codes unique for each gene, therefore what you have found are different genes, as such occupying different locus.
Paralogs are genes originated from duplications of one ancestral gene within the genome of the same specie and evolve new functions, componing a simple multigenic family, whose member have the same name, but different numbers.
The GATA zinc-fingers transcription factors family can be held as an example.
In H.sapiens this family encompasses 6 paralogs (GATA1, GATA2...GATA6) spread across the genome.

Yes, they have different accession numbers but same names and lie on different chromosomes so they are paralogs.
