FBS definitely has some hormone residues. Hormone levels are different in every product and lot. So if steroid hormone levels are of a major concern, I would recommend performing an ELISA-based measurement assay.
Charcoal Stripped Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS) is a good choice if you are requiring decreased levels of various hormones in your studies. Dextran treated Charcoal is used to selectively remove hormones without nonspecific loss of other serum components.
I also suggest immunoassays like ELISA for measuring steroid residues in reagents. You can also use liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry
