I never taken alcoholic beverage but I use 70% and 100% concentrated ethanol in lab for last 5 months. I feel unpleasantness with the smell of alcohol. I also often suffering from pain in heart. Is it due to alcohol? I generally do not use mask during using alcohol.
Ethyl alcohol is vaporized easily. The alcohol vapor mixes with air you breeze and get dissolved in the olfactory mucus covering the olfactory epithelium. The small molecules of alcohol penetrate the membrane of olfactory sensory neurons, and then go to neurons of the olfactory bulb, and then directly to your brain. There are special mechanisms that remove odorants and other molecules from the surface of the olfactory epithelium. However, at the long exposure to alcohol, the mechanisms cannot keep up and fail to protect you. There are many chemical substances, bacteria, and viruses that find their ways to the brain through the nose. Therefore, it is very advisable to use a mask when you work with volatile substances.

If you don't want to take alcohol it's fine. But you can use mask, when you are in lab. The cause of pain in your heart is more or less similar with last answer of Mr. Vitaly Vodyanoy. I am going with him.
