I'm trying to fix a mouse model for AD cognitive research. It's suggested that APP/PS1dE9 model is suitable and commonly used for cognitive research. I'm not sure exactly what the reasons are since I have no experience in this field. Does anyone have experience with this model? and why is this model chosen for cognitive trails?

Cognitive tests with this model is often done on 9-12 month old animals, the time seems a bit late though some cognitive deficits can be detected at this stage. I'll probably have to plan all my experiments within 12 months. Not much information can be found on the strain description on Jax. I wonder when is the time for cognitive tests decided, for this seems highly consistent in different trails for the same model, such as 6 months and 12 months for 3xTg-AD

Also I've noticed reports on retinal A-beta amyloid dipositions in 12month old APP/PS1dE9 model, but no visual impairments were specified. How does this affect cognitive test involving visual cues (e.g. Morris Water Maze) if the tests are often carried out around this age for this model?

Any experience with this model would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
