Being healthy is really important and I do believe staying physically fit can impact your research in a positive way due to the direct correlation of our mental physical wellness.
I have not read a research on the achievements of scientists and regular sports - fitness, swimming, mountain tourism, etc. Judging by my colleagues, I can say that sportsmen look younger. They also have good results. I can not compare to those who do not sport because I do not see them in the hall. It helps me personally, because I rest in the hall and I "arrange" my thoughts.

Research capabilities are not inherent in everyone. Of course, if in academics, they are necessary. Even though you have these capabilities and you are not physically fit, you will not be able to use these capabilities to the maximum. Physical and mental well being is of prime importance in all such activities.

I believe that while we are doing the physical activity, so we are doing "endeavor/try",
1. While physical activity we can also think about those questions which are otherwise bother us or difficult to concentrate,
2.While we endeavor we are simultaneously motivating ourself on our own,
3.With physical activity we enhance our physical limits which we had defined and now with consistent try we can defy the limits once again and this how we start growing, without harming anyone.
4.While defining and defying the limits we are growing and now its upto us to grow in our research or spiritually or physically or mentally or psychologically,
5.That's means if we converge our energy of endeavor to a particular field or are as defined in point 4., we can excel.
