I am trying to add sulfamic acid and calcium hypochlorite into my 0.1M citrate buffer. The buffer was prepared at pH 5 and I expect that the pH will not fluctuate much after addition of these components. However, the pH always drop to below 4. Is there any method to prevent changes of buffer pH after addition of sulfamic acid and hypochlorite?
Hi Henrik, I am trying to dissolve 6.79g of sulfamic acid in 50g of 0.1M citric acid buffer.
That is about 0.07 mol sulfamic acid, but you dissolve it in an amount of buffer of 50mLx0.1M= 0.005 mol.
Your acid addition is 10x higher than your buffer concentration, but you should be adding much less acid then the buffer. Decrease your acid amount 100x and it might work.
I propose you using the "Buffer Maker" Software. Is very tool easy for buffer design and permit the variation in pH values for acid and alkali addition. Regards
