Avicenna and other TPM sages believed that dreams may be a reflection of imbalance in human temperaments. For example, in overwelming of phlegm the patients see water and white fields in their dreams.
Yes, dreams do at times have connection with mental and phisical health.Dreams are essentially perdictive structures of human soul rooted in "deep conciousness".But dreams can be totally futuristic and thus semiotic in context and interpretation.Ibn-Sireen has opined that the implications of the dreams are closley linked with the social and behavirol outlook of the dreamer. For example a devout and religious person hearing azan(muslim call for prayer) in his dream has completely diffrent interpretation and meaning than the same dream being dreamt by a criminal. But establishing Avecinna' physiological thesis about dreams would be very difficult. It sounds reductionist. Dreams are very complex and have complex sources of inspiration(levels and modes of expression). The Freudian psychoanlytic theory of dream might link every dream with "sexual repressions" of early childhood. In some cases it might be true but in other it has failed to show any siginficance.Jung talks about "archetypes" when talking about dreams. He is more concerned about the predictive and guiding aspect of dream. he has opined that if you "see three dreamss in a consistent way", they might inform you about the future etc. There is famous dream of the Prophet Muhammad(and reported in the Quran), in which he saw that he was entering the Holy Kabba with his pious companions, which he actually did in real life. Then the famous dream of Prophet Yusuf reported in the Quran>Highly sybmolic but proved to be true.Imam Hussain dreaming at the advent in Karbalaa that his body is being severed by the wild animals, proved correct. Can we say he was dreaming about his mental and physical security when he talked about this dream with her sister?Similarly Imam Jafar has opined that true dream is the legacy of the prophecy given to spiritually purified people,Ahmad
I can give a partial answer to the question. Anxiety is a common symptom of many mental disorders. However, remembering dreams does not mean having a higher level of anxiety. People who dream do not wake up with more anxiety. About 30% of people remember their dreams and yet, only 6 out of 100 wake up with a nightmare. These data are not sufficient to support the idea that dream recall reflects poorer mental health. However, these data do not exhaust the question.

I would like to add a commentary from the psychoanalytical view. Today's psychoanalysis has developed in many different thought schools and there are also a couple of new ideas referring to the subject. When dreams are told and consequently interpreted in the course of an analytical treatment, this certainely strenghens the emotional, positive bond between analyst and analysand. In consequence, it helps the analysand to get in contact with deeper strata of his emotional-mental life and promotes symcolization.
There exists an impressive case study by the French author Tobie Nathan, where the patient's having and reporting a dream (after a dreamless time in the aftermath of a traumatizing accident) was a signicative event that braught recovery cp. La folie des autres).
Also the British author James Grotstein formulated the idea, that having dreams per se helps to organize and symbolize psychic content. He thinks of dreams as functioning as psychic container, refering with the last mentioned concept to the ideas of Wilfed R. Bion.
Furthermore, Mark Solms resent research provides evidence for Freuds theory that dreams protect our sleep (and therefore or health) by mental wish-fulillment of instincts that would otherwise lead to wakening.
Caro Majid, poderia lhe dizer algo a partir da perspectiva psicanalítica e
assim o farei.

From my personal experience, at least some of them do reflect the physical and mental conditions of a person. In one of the Indian philosophical scriptures, an emperor dreams that he was a beggar begging for alms. Feeling hunger pangs he wakes up to find the truth. The next morning he summons his philosopher Guru (teacher) and requests an explanation. The discussion turns to the difference between the real and the unreal and the different types/stages of wakefulness (full wakefulness, dream state and deep sleep. A fourth state the Thuriya is experienced in deep contemplation or Samadhi or meditational absorption).
Mackenzie, you will find in On Religion (Amazon.com, Pinheiro (I. M. R.)) information about this. A psychiatrist once took note of his clinical findings and he found out that some of his clients had premonitory dreams that were clearly fully verified. He took note of those dreams before the events took place, so that that has to be something like a final proof. Usually dreams are different from reality, however. Premonitory dreams are definitely rare. I myself only have one that I recorded. How many did you have, may I ask?
A structure of reality in dreaming is, reality, we sense or feel, but the difference is escape. I and you can awake, however, the' maybe in the answer is the key. Mental heath of a person depends on the maybe' as in the dream. Think about the wonder you feel in your dreams... and so it goes, follows adventure's or will. Limbic stem, actuation.
