In many times, breeders tend to evaluate large pool of germplasm. From a few hundreds to thousands in network research models. Is ABD the best design in such scenario. Or We need improvements? Or any other more efficient designs and statistical models are available?
I think screening large no of germplasm augmented we have only but we can improve its by increasing replication if possible.
ABD is the best and most experimental design used in this cases. In another cases, you can use alpha lattice or lattice, but this needs replications
I routinely run field trials for large numbers of genotypes using appropriate spatial models with partial replication - I use DiGGer which is publicly available software. You need to analyse the field trial data with linear mixed model software which tests for spatial variation (fixed and random effects). Our paper in G3 2015 5:1419 shows results for field trials with ~1400 entries, many of which were unreplicated. So yes, more efficient models are available for large numbers of genotypes with partial replication.
