I have done SDS-PAGE for serum proteins (NP-protein interaction) and i am getting quite a good number of bands, now i want to probably identify the protein that are associated with the NPs, can i use UniProtKB for the same. The idea came from the fact that if we use serum proteins in SDS-PAGE and the band comes close to 67kDa we directly say that it will be HSA so in reference to this can we do it for other proteins (protein bands) present in the SDS-PAGE gel.
I don't understand how do you want to use UniProtKB protein database, its a sequence database with functional annotation. And neither you have any sequence or any pathway analysis for you to use this database.
Hi Abhijeet, it is just like when we say that from SDS-PAGE, the protein band corresponding to 67 kDa would be Human serum albumin. In the same way can we arbitarily identify protein based on the molecular weight. Like we can enter mol. Wt in the uniprot and it will give us the type of proteins under that mol. Wt.
It can be possible, but it need a lot of manual input for curation and validation. It is not a novel approach, it was used in the beginning of omics era, but I don't see its much use for the proteomics now a days.
