Hi,
I have a process flow diagram that consists of a series of reactors, heaters, compressors and separators and I must calculate the total energy demand of the process.
My question is whether negative duties (such as those from separators) should be added to the total summation of all duties i.e. the total energy demand? I'm not sure whether these negative duties should be added, effectively taking the total energy demand down, or whether these should just be discounted as waste heat.

yes ofcourse you should take into account all the duties. -ve duty reflects the consumption of cooling agent.
