I am extracting RNA from milled plant material (BSL1) for downstream RNAseq. If possible, it would be great not to take over the only biosafety cabinet in the lab for RNase free space for weeks but instead have a designated bench that is wiped down with 10% bleach followed by either RNase Zap or similar project. How much am I at risk for contamination if I were to do the latter?
If short on BSC space as you are, it's always better to have a designated space for RNA extractions (even if it is on the bench top) than to have to share a space and worry about what contaminants others using the space may bring in. Alternatively, if you have plenty of fume hoods, you could designate this as an RNA extraction space for the entire process as well, since you typically perform some of the extraction steps in there anyways.

A clean bench designated for RNA extraction is what you need. Although you will need a fume hood when you use TRizol, TRIpure, Accuzol or any similar products for RNA extraction.

I have found that using RNase-Free water,tubes and pipets from Ambion and a quick wipe of your bench with 70% ethanol is good enough. Keep all of your supplies for RNA work only.
