Since the first report in 1997 it is known that the chicken anemia virus protein, apoptin, induces apoptosis specifically in human transformed and malignant cells but not in normal cells. There are 167 reports in PubMed dealing with its different functions in cancer vs normal cells, molecular mechanisms of apoptosis induction only in cancer cells, and so on. In my opinion, this is the perfect agent for specific and efficient targeting of cancer cells. So why is it still not in used in the clinic? Or am I too naive?
