Abstract of a manuscript: what is the total word count of an abstract in a paper publication? How best can it be written?
Think word count of abstract is depending on each journal / conference proceeding's requirements. I observed some range from 200 to 500 words. You can refer to their website first before confirming the word count requirement that you need to comply.
In my personal opinion, finding following are the easier ways to write an abstract:
Writing abstract last i.e. after you'd completed all the manuscript sections from Introduction to Conclusion - because by then, you know head & tail about the entire research, easier for you to summarize / hi-light the salient / key points.
Apply this format: problem statement --> research approach / solution --> research outcome.
Apply Emerald's abstract approach i.e. Background, Objectives, Methods, Results, Conclusions and Originality / Value.
Word count for an abstract depends on the journal you want to submit your paper to. It is usually between 100 and 250 words (although some biomedical journals accept 300 words).
Given that an abstract summaries a paper, I believe that it is best written after completing a paper. Here, you briefly state the background, the objective, method, findings and conclusion/recommendations.

The abstract of a manuscript publication is a very important to communicate your research. It a concise summary of the manuscript. It is not an introduction to what follows, but a complete and concise description of key methodological features of the study and important research findings, and typically includes the following information: Background, Purpose, Methods, Results, and Conclusion.
Most scientific journals provide author guidelines that include the suggested format and length of a manuscript abstract. The typical length of an abstract is 250 words. However, some journals limit the length of an abstract to only 50 to 100 words and this is a particular challenge.
Abstract Writing is not an easy task as you have to cover all the issues as followings:
1. Sentence from introductory issue
2. Objectives were the research
3. Methodology & Methods of the research
4. Research findings & Result analysis.
All the issues you have to cover by 150 to 200 words. There will be one paragraph only but the sentences should be linked up with the synchronization step by step and must be completed in the top page.Writing should be formal and without camouflaging. Simple words should be used for the maximum communication with the readers.
A good abstract should be brief but powerful enough to convey every information to help readers in a glance to know the main ideas of the study. Thus, it is a mini IMRAD ( Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussions). Ideally the word count is ranged from 150-300 words.
The word count has a lot to do with the target journals. Most journals specify the acceptable word count for the abstract. In case of no specification, between 150 - 200 should be fine.
150-350 words depending upon the journal you are submitting to.....and should highlight the following points not necessarily in headings (Background, Objectives, Methods, Results, Conclusions).
The acceptable word counts in structured abstracts depends on the Journal scopes and type of study. for example for review articles, research articles, and case reports in medical journals: up to 300, 250, and 150 words, repectively.
