I heard from a colleague that RPP30 is a gene that is very rarely duplicated or deleted in cancer cells, but I haven't been able to find any reference for that. Does anyone know of any research that showed this? Or is it one of those stories where one group used it a long time ago and it spread as a standard that self-propels its own momentum?

as you'll see in punned (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=RPP30), there are few papers taking the RPP30 gene as reference. I Think the origin is that some labs are used to analyze this gene as gold standard in real time pCR, but on the other hand every parts of the genome can be modified in cancer onset and development. there are lot of housekeeping genes that you can use, no clue to use this one instead of other. For instance, typically in the NanoString set design, more than 5 HK are used to model the analysis since all, in RNA or DNA, can modulate sample from sample.
