Why assigning the shell section by selecting middle surface, top surface, or bottom surface to represent the reference surface makes difference?

I'm modeling thin-walled columns using shell element in ABAQUS. I'm using different ways to shape the geometry to end up with the same final configuration whatever the way is. I noticed that when I'm assigning the shell section by selecting middle, top, or bottom surface gives different results, why?

Does anyone experience this?
