In general, there are two big perspectives about political culture: functionalist and cultural. Almond and Verba are the representatives of the first one. But I don't know enough theorists of the second one. Could anybody suggest theorists of the cultural perspective on political culture? Thanks.
I've recently been actively researching the political culture of different countries, comparing them. One of the founders of the global approach to the study of political culture is an American sociologist and political scientist Ronald Inglehart. The essence of a "silent revolution" in Inglehart is that due to the economic growth and the absence of global armed conflict, the number of "materialists" around the world is shrinking and the number of "postmaterialists" - is growing.
R. Inglehart approach embodied in large-scale scientific project World Values Survey, which is a global network of scientists studying the basic values and beliefs of citizens about a hundred countries.
Major indices measuring project Inglehart: perception of life, environment, work, family, politics and society, religion and morality, national identity, socio-demographic index. Also takes into account indicators secular-rational values.
His work - "Modernization, Cultural Change and Democracy: The Human Development Sequence, Cambridge University Press, 2005 (co-authored with Christian Welzel)". Another approach has Dutch political scientists Hyunks F. and F. Hikspurs. They introduced additional types of political cultures.
José Ortega y Gasset offers a culturalist perspective about political culture. For him, political culture is superficial and depends on deeper, more intimate cultural preferences. See "España invertebrada" (1921). He is influenced by Max Scheler, "Der Formalismus in der Ethik" and by Henry Buckle, "History of England."
Sorry for joining this discussion with a question, but... I think understand the way how Inglehart thinks about political culture. But is there any concept which is defined more in the way how societies are able to, for example, tolerate some kind of (bad) behavior?
