Census data seems only to reach the year 2011, but there might be estimates somewhere that I cannot find? I am looking not only for the largest cities but also towns etc. Thanks!
To find recent population data for Indian cities, you can explore the following sources:
Census of India:
The Census of India provides detailed population data, including for cities, towns, and villages. The most recent census data is from 2011, but it is the most comprehensive government source.
You can visit the official website: Census of India.
Government Publications and Reports:
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs often releases reports on urban development that include population estimates for Indian cities.
World Bank and UN Data:
International organizations like the World Bank and the United Nations also provide population estimates for cities worldwide, including Indian cities. Their data may be more current, using projections and estimates.
City-Specific Government Websites:
Many large Indian cities, like Mumbai, Delhi, Calcutta and Bangalore, have their own municipal websites that may provide recently updated population statistics.
Research Papers and Journals:
Academic and research papers often include recent population data and projections for specific cities, particularly in the context of urbanization studies.
Statista:
Statista provides up-to-date statistics and projections for the population of major Indian cities.
World Population Review:
The World Population Review website also offers up-to-date population data for many Indian cities, often with projections for recent years.
These sources should give you a good overview of the population trends in Indian cities, depending on the level of detail and recency you need.
Dear Frank Veroustraete thank you very much for your rich information. I also found the following link: https://statisticstimes.com/demographics/country/india-cities-population.php
In india , finding authentic population related data , only recognised and reliable source remains the Census of India data, which provides data based in population survey conducted every 10 years. The cycle in current century, started from 2001, 2011 and now the data ror 2021 should have been available. But due to Covid 19, census was not done. Accordingly, it will be difficult to get population data for 2020. There are numerous agencies at the global and local level which try to estimate the population of India. UN even declared India to be most populated country in the world, based on Population clock. But population don't run on clocks or mechanical,Being human based, population is a combination of lot many factors. It is not known why 2020 population is being searched . One can search Census web site for population, however it can only be estimates. Population remains a fiction and not a fact.
