If you mean oxygen like reactive gas the mechanism is simple: formation of CO and CO2.

Thanks for the answers. I am also interested in how the gases affect the graphite surface at high temperatures. For example, are there cracks forming or is ablation happening? Besides oxygen, I am interested in H2 and N2.
