The level of malonaldehyde (MDA) is being measured from both tissue and serum samples concerning lipid peroxidation. In literature, the unit of MDA level in serum is mentioned as micro mole / Litre. However, the unit of MDA in tissue is given different in different papers such as nmol MDA/mg protein, nmol MDA / g of wet tissue, pmol MDA/mg of protein. It makes confusion to convey the results of MDA in tissue source.
Please, let me to understand about the standard unit of tissue MDA. Advance thanks for your replies.
Measurement of MDA in serum is confounded in that TXa2 synthase produces MDA. There are enough data in the literature showing that MDA is not a valid measure of lipid peroxidation for serum, tissues, etc. TBARS are faulty. MDA is fine for isolated systems such as oils. How are you measuring MDA and for what purpose?
If you measure MDA in plasma usually the unit used is nmol/ml or micromol/L.
It was somewhere stated in the literature (I can not recal the original article) that besides MDA also other (non MDA) oxidation products react with TBA. Therefore it was proposed not to use a term "MDA production or MDA level". Instead, the term TBARS (Thio Barbituric Acid Reacting Substances) was proposed. Anyway, these products can be expressed as MDA (if you used it as standard) equivalent. On the other hand such determinations should be made only comparatively. Regarding above the molar concentrations are most accepted units. I do not agree with Matthew. Even in pure triglyceride/FFA system during oxidation not only MDA is formed. Look for GLC/MS patterns. You will be surprised with the number of peaks.
Is there any other fastest techniques, method or procedure available to measure ROS and RNS produced in animal or human body as measurement in serum or tissue sample. Kindly suggest accordingly.
