Majority of domestic water use is non-potable. Rainwater harvesting is one of the best practices, e.g. rainwater tanks at household scale. Attached image illustrates the design and mantainance principles of such a system. Besides the use of rainwater also reuse of grey water can be implemented to reduce potable water use. For this a treatment system has to be considered, such as filtration and disinfection. A combination of rainwater and greywater systems is known as a hybrid rainwater-greywater decentralised system.

Grey water is water from kitchen. This water can be treated by using activated charcoal in horizontal flow followed by vertical flow. the water can then be re-used in watering of lawns and washing floors in garages.
