Majority of domestic water use is non-potable. Rainwater harvesting is one of the best practices, e.g. rainwater tanks at household scale. Attached image illustrates the design and mantainance principles of such a system. Besides the use of rainwater also reuse of grey water can be implemented to reduce potable water use. For this a treatment system has to be considered, such as filtration and disinfection. A combination of rainwater and greywater systems is known as a hybrid rainwater-greywater decentralised system.
