We are completing a study of second grade children's responses to standardized testing (Common Core requirement) done three times a year (Fall, Winter, Spring). We have 50 children enrolled, 17 of which were in a first grade classroom taught by a teacher who used Visual Phonics to supplement literacy instruction. Our null hypothesis is that those children, due to that exposure, will do better on the tests (mean oral reading rate, ELA performance assessment, and Adaptive Reading) than will the other children. Descriptive statistics (mean and variance) indicate little, if any, difference in scores. Should I use a one-tailed ANOVA, two-tailed ANOVA, or T-test to further test our hypothesis? I used to hand calculate these thirty years ago, and am amazed that there are programs to do this.
