The most needed thing for the world is to find medications that can treat cancer, AIDS and other dangerous diseases.
The most needed thing for the world is to find solutions for world disputes through peaceful negotiations and mutual understanding.
The most needed thing for humanity is to destroy weapons of mass destruction and to let all countries of the world live peacefully.
There are so many things urgently needed for humanity. Among them is the need to find a solution to famine and to put an end to the tragedy of people who are sufgetinfrom starvation in Africa and poor countries.
Toooooo generic !!! Every Engineer/scientist has a role to play !!! The most important one is our lifestyle improved because communication technology from telephone to Satellite/RADAR communication to weather networks to Medical equipment to Entertainment to Building materials to Renewable energy to Manufacturing to ....list is endless
The essential role is to find yourself at a place !!!
E.g: I discuss and taught technology and knew /know I contribute :)
Can scientists, working on the return of simplicity, spontaneity, and goodness to human life?
Scientist, each one in its own field, could offer valuabe service for humanity... for example, the pharmacist could offer a cure for a certain disease, a forensic analyst as in my case could offer justice by resloving crimes... thus the sum of all services will improve the humans life quality...
Finding out solutions against global warmth and monitoring pollution.
Find cheap treatment and cure for conditions affecting poor and underserved populations around the globe.
Very good question. Here is my humble opinion:
Not all those, who are considered as scientists, are fit to offer humanity the much needed progress & development.
Humanity is in bad need for ethical values and these include firm stands against racism, falsehood, injustice, double standards, arrogance, and bloody disputes.
A "real" scientist , who is equipped by the scientific way of thinking, will have positive intrinsic attributes which will contribute well to instill or inspire ethical or moral codes to others thereby building up progress & development in various spheres & on a variety of fronts.
Explain weather and the phenomenon of climate change before it gets much worse.
They must refuse to cooperate with applications that are humanly dubious.
To make up for past neglect, they must engage in political activity to try to undo the damage that they have cooperated in producing, e.g. in armaments or upsetting the ecology.
In the context of the current global challenges, we believe that scientists must provide solutions / information / studies in accordance with the 5 P of the UN Declaration, namely people, planet, prosperity, partnership and peace.

Result oriented studies which strives to ensure peace and stability by creating ecological harmony. Solving basic problems that stems most local communities or vulnerable groups results in some balance or harmony
In effect...if they are able to bring ecological harmony or balance through equity and equality which in reality is difficult to achieve across all sectors. Most needed stuff is equity and equality among subjects in solving basic societal problems

At the outset for every individual of the world , humanity can be if creative line of action for every individual which help him to create the life of his own for his success,joy ,& happiness for himself,family & its surrounding in this line scientist can certainly create their research for the problems of individual especially regarding the health at also well many psychic problems for the individual related to their nerviness & also sometime to break down their life .

I agree with Rohit, there is indeed a line, a destiny, a mission on Earth for every man in the world, and the more the individual realizes that he has his own values, family and society values at work and In the free time, the individual becomes aware of his place and role in society and will be happier and more reconciled with everything he does and is.
