Microbial bio-reporters offer excellent potentialities for the detection of the bio-available portion of pollutants in contaminated environments, which can not be easily measured. For assessing pollutant bio-availability is to use bacteria that are engineered to express an easily measurable protein (a so called reporter protein) in response to pollutant.

Bio-reporters are living microbial cells that have been genetically engineered to produce a measurable signal in response to a specific chemical or physical agent in their environment. Bioreporters contain two essential genetic elements, a promoter gene and a reporter gene. Novel bioreactor assays for the detection of bioavailability of long-chain alkanes based on the marine bacterium Alcanivorax borkumensis strain SK2 have been studied (for more details on this please see doi: 10.1111/j.1462-2920.2011.02552.x.).
