The World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED), also called the Brundtland Commission after its Chairman Gro Harlem Brundtland (a Norwegian physician), was an international commission that discussed and devised strategies for protecting the environment and promoting sustainable development. The Brundtland Commission published its final report, Our Common Future, in 1987. Our Common Future stated that governments could not address environmental protection separately from related crises, such as economic development and energy production. Our Common Future also outlined a blueprint for dealing with these interlocking crises simultaneously. The findings and proposals of Our Common Future have shaped international environmental policy for the last two decades.
Environmental Pollution is a global problem.It has to be controlled by all nations,more by rich and developed ones.

Completely agree with your concern and strategies on the environmental pollution. However I feel that controlling the pollution activities that too on global scale is very difficult, but definitely the pollution activities and effects can be reduced/minimized. Every year through the UN initiative Environmental Day is celebrated all over the World highlighting different themes, but these celebrations are ending with just a formal functions without any follow up with ground level actions. It is told every year that the Environmental Day is celebrated to sensitize the people on the importance of protecting and conserving our environment. I have always argued that there is no lack of awareness or knowledge on the issue of environmental pollution -- to air; water or soil, but it is the arrogance of the people towards the environment, which is causing continuance of pollution and to some extent increase in the deterioration of the environment. Unless this negligent attitude of the people; government and the politicians, is changed for the better nothing can improve.
We must take some urgent steps which are worth mentioning.
1.Restructuring science & Engineering Education..
2.Restoring air,water,soil and ecosystem.
3.Recycling & Reusing.
4.Reduction in waste generation.
5.Reduction in consumption.
Immediate: Reduction in road traffic (not only tailpipe emissions, but also real traffic work).
Long term: Reverse population growth.
Maybe a harsh recommendation, but never the less true.
