The recent Science paper by C. Tomasetti and Vogelstein B. uses analyses of cancer risk and stem cell divisions to argue that many cancers, such as pancreatic cancer, are just bad luck and therefore unavoidable (Science. 2015 Jan 2;347(6217):78-81. doi: 10.1126/science.1260825). Given that smoking for example doubles the risk of pancreatic cancer (http://pathology.jhu.edu/pancreas/BasicRisk.php?area=ba), it seems that their analysis of environmental independence may not be solid despite their peer-reviewed publication. What are your thoughts on cancer and environmental factors in cancer risk?
