We largely teach students and then ask them questions that we taught them how to answer. In science and many other areas of life, one wishes to address and answer questions where you have not learned the answers and often have not learned how to answer them. I think there are strategies to prepare students to answer questions where they have not been taught the answers and would value hearing your ideas for comparison.
You can use the constructivist approach to learning and provide or point students to web sources for them to explore the topic. You can present interesting scenarios that represent important concepts/trends/issues on the topic and allow them to explore solutions and answers to your posted questions. You would then guide them in giving feedback as to clues they might have missed for answering the questions. An alternative is to use the debate for students to explore a topic in the course content.
