LPS is obtained from different bacteria, and their activities may differ. Additionally the degree of glycosilation also influences LPS activity. Which origin or brand or kind of LPS yields a clear and consistent pattern of systemic inflammation in mice? We use C57BL/6 mice.
Some researches propose that LPS from Salmonella is more potent than the LPS from E. Coli.

We have employed and compared the LPS from Salmonella against LPS from E. Coli 0111:B4, and we found a strongest TLR4 stimulation with the first one.

We have tried many different LPS to induce systemic inflammation. Our aim was, anyway, to induce maturation of dendritic cells. LPS from Salmonella, as Andreu said, is more potent that LPS from E. coli.
But the explanation might be that the Salmonella one (and the E. coli but in a minor extent) are both contaminated with peptidoglycan and other TLR/NLR ligands in small traces. I've finally decided to use ultrapure LPS from Invivogen (10-20 ug per mouse induces good systemic inflammation), but if you want the induce only systemic inflammation, I would go for the Salmonella one.
Hi Enrique, I use LPS from E. coli (O111:B4) from Sigma. It works pretty good. Remember to use LPS from the same lot for your experiments and also take into consideration the potency of your LPS.

I injected 1mg/kg via i.p for a consecutive of 6 days in C57BL/6.. we observed quite good systemic inflammation including neuroinflammation.
We predominantly work with humans, so would take some amount of convincing to get ethics approval, although I vaguely remember a paper where they inject LPS into volunteers including this one: http://jap.physiology.org/content/118/7/818.long. It will depend on what is the disease model you are trying to replicate in mice. If it is gut-barrier related then LPS from E.coli/sigma if pathogen specific bug then from salmonella.
