The bio-genesis of miRNA as explained by many researchers explain that miRNA duplex gets separated in single strands after entering cytoplasm. miRNA enters into RISC while miRNA* gets degraded. However certain papers have reported the presence of miRNA* in the RNA population of their samples. Are these some exceptional cases specific to certain organisms or conditions or some other dimension of miRNA role in gene regulation. Should we screen our isolated RNA samples for both miRNA strands always?
