Over the last decade I have come into contact with (electronic) band structures for the different projects I have been involved with and I have come to appreciate them as very useful tools for examining a material. Unfortunately, I have yet to come across a good review work showing all that you can derive from a band structure.

A band structure contains a lot of information, however, in general an analysis is constricted to deriving the band gap (size, position, direct/indirect nature). You can also analyse the character of the bands and learn about which atoms/bonds are involved, and in graphene-research much interest goes to the conical point.

As I see it, there is much more you can derive from a band structure (and it does not need to be limited to the electronic one, the phonon one is also of interest), however, the knowledge of specific aspects seems to be very tightly related to the specific community using it (making it not so obvious to find for someone outside that community).

Since I should be able to reach many different communities at ones here on ResearchGate I have two questions:

1) are you aware of a general review work giving an overview of what information (and how) can be derived from a band structure.

2) for your specific community, what features are you looking at/interested in, in a band structure. (and possibly some reference(s) explaining the concept)

thanks
